FREE SERGER PROJECT

LINGERIE BAG

©1988 by Diane Bossom

This is a project I designed and taught in my Serger Club meetings. My projects are designed and written in a generic format. I don't get brand specific because there are too many differences among sergers. Most of my projects are for 3/4 thread sergers. Of course, a 5 thread will do all the techniques covered in any of my projects. The project instructions will refer you to your manual for specifics for your brand of serger. Just print out this page, or highlight and save the project instructions below.

Feel free to share these instructions, but please leave my name and © intact.

This lace bag is just the protection you need to keep your delicate items from being snagged or lost in the washing machine. It's also great to store hosiery. Just slip the ribbons over a hanger and keep it in your closet. No more snags caused from dresser drawers, snaps, buckles, etc. rubbing against your hose. Need a gift in a hurry? Make one or more of these to give for birthdays, showers, or holidays.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • one 36" x 18" piece of lace fabric
  • 2 yds ribbon (can be any width up to 1")
  • thread to match or blend with fabric

(Note: any type of open-weave fabric can be substituted for the lace.)

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

1) Cut fabric into two 18" squares, round off the bottom corners if desired.

2) Cut the ribbon into two equal lengths.

SERGING INSTRUCTIONS

1) Set up serger using the scraps of fabric to adjust tension. A balanced 4 thread stitch works well because the safety stitch adds the strength and durability needed for repeated washing.

2) The seam allowance is 1/4". The allowance for the top casing depends on the width of the ribbon.

3) Serge from the top corners ( where the casing will be ) for 1 1/2" down each of the 18" sides. Barely trim the fabric.

4) Fold the top edge of the fabric to the wrong side to form the casing (width of casing determined by width of ribbon).

5) Fold the entire casing to the right side and serge carefully over the three layers so that you don't cut the fabric at all.

6) With right sides together, start serging from the casing seam (leave opening for ribbon on both sides) around the bottom and up the other side. Serge off where casing begins. Be sure to stitch over the "tails" of the casing seams. Tie off both tails and trim (Fray Check may cause snags).

7) Turn right side out. Insert ribbons and tie knots at each end.

I hope you enjoy making lingerie bags on your serger. Pass them on.
